PublisherA publisher is an organization, company or individual who is responsible for creating the production of a publication. Many times it is also the person or company who bears the cost/financial risk in making the product available and a success.

There are all kinds of publishers. Most deal in print media and books. Anything printed and distributed can be described as a publication. At the beginning of the 20th century, book publishing was dominated by few large and powerful corporations. Over the years, publishing has evolved into several new entities such as online publishing, assisting individuals with self-publishing and technology publication publishing.

There are several categories in publishing: (These are just summaries and can sometimes cross attributes with other categories)

  • Trade publishers Books read for personal enjoyment.
  • Textbook publishing deals with books sold and used in colleges and trade schools.
  • Scholarly publishing are unusual not-for-profit publishers for establishments such as museums.
  • Reference publishing is a book used for frequent referencing used for subjects such as history.
  • Self-publishing is just that... the individuals or business publishes their own book.

In recent years, corporations have used in-house publishers to self-published manuals for their own use and consumer informational booklets.

  • Entertainment publishing

Entertainment publishing such as song publishing - is helping artists get their work published and potentially bought.

  • News publishing

Generally deals with weekly news magazines or daily newspapers. Newspaper publication is usually always fast paced.

Publishing seems like a simple business but the not so simple process actually requires a lot of hard work. They register the work with the correct agencies and ensure that the work cannot be stolen. They negotiate prices, coordinate an advertising plan and create contracts for the work to be sold. If an artist goes on tour the publisher coordinates the tour dates and book signings.

The newest form of publishing is the growing trend of mobile publishing. The cost of advertising through cell phones can save thousands of dollars for a company and generate three times the amount of what it cost to create the advertisement.
