Career Summary
A game programmer is a software engineer who develops computer or video games or related software (such as game accessories tools). Programmers write the computer code that runs and controls the game. They may also test the code and fix bugs, in addition to developing customized tools for use by other team members of the game development team. Different platforms have particular programming requirements and there are also various specialist fields within programming of the game including physics programming, AI (artificial intelligence), 3D engine development, interface and control systems.
There are lucrative careers in game programming as the demand for video games is rising. Sales of game software generated more than $6 billion in 2006. Game programmers are sometimes hired to work on a specific part of a game where they are responsible for designing, implementing, documenting, and maintenance of game tools. Game programmers are also responsible for designing and implementing new tools and communicating with teams to improve existing tools.
