Diesel Mechanic
Career Highlights
- Overhaul trucks, buses, and all kinds of diesel engines
- Problem solving is important
- Each project is a new challenge

Career Summary
Diesel mechanics are responsible for troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems, air and water-cooled combustion engines, and diesel powered engine problems.
They sometimes do the scheduling and completing of all planned maintenance service agreements on products as scheduled. Projects must be performed in a timely fashion complete with all documentation. This could include time sheets, repair orders, machine checklists, receiving records, expense reports, and repair order logs.
In addition, diesel mechanics may receive incoming parts orders, verify quantities, store material in proper service truck bin location, assign and adjust bin locations, and assure that excess inventory is eliminated. Communications with vendors and other departments such as sales and accounting may be required.
Customer service may be required from time to time. At some points, a diesel mechanic may need to offer estimates and prepare necessary data to provide an accurate repair quote to the customer, including labor and trip charge rates.
The diesel engine is the workhorse powering the nation's trucks and buses because it delivers more power, is more efficient, and is more durable than its gasoline-burning counterpart. Diesel-powered engines also are becoming more prevalent in light vehicles, including passenger vehicles, pickups, and other work trucks.
