Career Summary

A civil drafter has a lot of detailed responsibilities. They create maps, diagrams, and profiles, using various surveys so that a solid and quality structure can be built. However they don’t always sit in an office waiting to draw a map. They accompany field professional crews for statistical information and to collect data required to revise construction drawings.

Some civil drafter responsibilities:

  • Calculates excavation tonnage and prepares graphs and fill-hauling diagrams used in earth-moving operations.
  • Computes and represents characteristics and dimensions of borehole, such as depth, degree, and direction of inclination.
  • Finishes and duplicates drawings, according to required mediums and specifications for reproduction, using blueprinting, photographing, or other duplicating methods.
  • Drafts plans and detailed drawings for structures, installations, and construction projects, such as highways, sewage disposal systems, and dikes.
  • Plots boreholes for oil and gas wells from photographic subsurface survey recordings and other data, using computer-assisted drafting equipment.

Computers help drafters to change their drawings, and fill in details for complicated maps and blueprints. They can make 3-D models and preview the whole construction process based on ‘in the field’ information, computer renditions and historical land information.

Industrial growth and increasingly complex design problems associated with new manufacturing processes will increase the demand for drafting services. Drafters are beginning to break out of the traditional roles and do work traditionally performed by architects, thus increasing the demand for drafters. While growth is expected to be greatest for mechanical and civil drafters, demand for particular drafting specialties varies based on the needs of local industry.

Civil drafters translate ideas into technical drawings, detailed plans, and models for construction of residential and commercial buildings and projects using information collected through various means. Their drawings provide visual guidelines for numerous other professionals such as the team that will install heating, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
