Career Summary

A cardiovascular technologist assists doctors with patients who may have or has heart and or vascular problems. They specialize in working with equipment to test for specific potential conditions that could lead to heart problems or are used on patients with existing problems. There are three main specialty fields within cardiovascular technology practice - vascular technology, echocardiography, and invasive cardiology.

The majority of cardiovascular technologist work in hospitals, but other employment opportunities exist in physicians offices, educational facilities, medical centers, noninvasive cardiovascular laboratories, electrophysiology laboratories, and mobile diagnostic units.

In addition to testing, cardiovascular technologists ensures the procedure rooms are adequately prepared for testing and emergencies. They clean and wrap packages of instruments and will set up and operate many various types of cardiovascular diagnostic equipment to determine the extent of the disease process, injury, and/or illness.

Additional duties of some technicians include scheduling appointments, taking diagnosis notes, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and updating patientsí files. Job growth for cardiovascular technologists is projected to be faster than average due to the increase of heart disease among older people.
