Career Summary

Art DirectorArt directors come up with the visual concepts for everything from billboard advertisements to magazine layouts to the coordination of artistic events. Not all art directors work in advertising; some create the look of website publications, such as commercial news or consumer products. They thrive on the challenge of coming up with a continuous stream of fresh, new ideas.

Art Director Careers:

  • Advertising: In advertising they may not necessarily be the head of an art department. In advertising practice, they typically work in coordination with a copywriter. Together, they work on different advertising concepts.
  • Publishing: Here they formulate design concepts and presentation approaches for print layout designs and visual communications media, such as magazines, books, newspapers, and packaging.
  • Multi-media artists & animators: They help create special effects in animation, or other visual images using film, video or computers for use in computer games, movies, music videos, and online commercials.
  • Set designers: They design sets for theatrical, motion picture, and television productions.

Art directors have a variety of responsibilities that coordinate with other artistic team members. They are directly involved in the decisions of basic layout design and specify material details, such as style and size of type, photographs, graphics, animation, video and sound.

Art directors will also sometimes manage their own accounts working within budgets and scheduling discussions with a variety of departments to discuss client requirements as well as supervise the production of the project. Normally the art director will present the final layouts to clients for approval. This is a career for those who are organized, creative, and bold enough to take risks.
