Acupuncturist
Career Highlights
- Have a desire to learn Eastern medical techniques
- Help people relieve pain and other discomfort
Career Summary
Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating tiny needles into "acupuncture points" on the body. Taking influence from eastern medicine, acupuncturists believe that life energy, called chi, flows along invisible conduits in the body known as meridians. According to acupuncture theory, these conduits become blocked, causing ill health. Acupuncture is one method of unblocking them, restoring health and well-being.
Different types of acupuncture are practiced and taught throughout the world. They stimulate the nervous system, releasing neurochemicals such as endorphins through trigger points known to have specific musculoskeletal effects.
Acupuncturists work with individuals who look for assistance in relieving acute and chronic health problems. These can include muscular-skeletal injuries related to every day sports and work related accidents, as well as obesity, smoking and chronic headaches.
Acupuncturists usually work in professional holistic healing centers that either specialize in holistic care or combine both western and holistic healing practices.
