This question is a test.
The easy answer is that you are the best person for the job -- but the employer is looking for more than that. They usually want you to provide a detailed explanation of your basic skills, and how you plan to apply them to the position for the benefit of the company. They want you to do it without hesitating or grasping for words, and they want it to make sense. In other words, you have to know exactly what you are going to say in advance.
Why are you the best person for the job? What qualities do you have that will be the most useful in this position? Come up with a few beforehand, and write them down. For example:
- Are you a natural salesperson?
- Are you good at handling upset customers?
- Are you a fast learner?
- Do you know a lot about the products or services the company sells?
- Have you done anything related to the work before?
"This is a basic but important question," says Richard Alberg, a senior vice president at Kenexa, a Pennsylvania-based recruitment and retention company. "We are looking for evidence that the candidate has thought about the job, the company, the brand."
Thus, your answer should not only be based upon the skills you have to offer, but should also be based on the research you have done on the company. Sincerity is extremely important, and is easily sensed. Relate your answer to the company's goals as well as your own.
Example: I'm extremely skilled in the kitchen, and I have plans to go to culinary school to become a chef. Your line cook position will give me the opportunity to learn even more, and apply the things I learn in school to work. Plus, I hear you're opening a restaurant in Chicago, which is where I'm going to school.
