Roughing It: College Below the Poverty Line

The American economy could be better, millions of American families as well as us single folk are limping from one paycheck to the next. Over the years and through the Technology recession I've learned a lot about how to work with what I have. Now add college to your financial responsibilities and you have just added what seems like a barrel of bricks to your back. But don't avoid going to college or worse; quit college. You can fit college into your monthly financial outline if you're willing to make some sacrifices and college is worth the sacrifices.

Every time you have to choose something less expensive remember why you're doing it. For a great career after graduation which will allow you to comfortably afford the luxuries and the little extras in life.

Discount Groceries / Food 4 Less

Food 4 Less operates discount warehouse style supermarkets in Southern California, Nevada, Illinois and Indiana. You can save a very nice percentage of your grocery budget by only shopping during Sales Sweeps and paying attention to what's on sale, then stocking up as much as possible.

Yard Sales

One person's junk is your treasure. While in the process of losing the starting and in-between weight I couldn't imagine spending a lot of money on clothes I was only going to wear for a few months. Instead I went to yard sales in nice neighborhoods. Clothing that cost $15 + at a non profit thrift shop cost me $1 to $5 a piece.

Other particularly great items you can save money on by going to yard sales include household furnishings, garden equipment, tools and crystal, glass and rustic type gifts.

Use Coupons

I have regularly saved 50-60% off of my food bill by using free grocery coupons.

Ask For Discounts

If you don't ask, you won't get it. "It" can be anything. The simple act of asking for what you want can sometimes be the best money saving secrets of them all. You may not get a discount with the first person you encounter but try again a few days later or the next time you're at the same business. If the person you're speaking to doesn't have the authority to give you a discount than ask if you could speak to the manager. However, don't sound bitter or rude. Politeness will be the key that unlocks the door to the discounts.

Happy Hour

Learn where some of the better Happy Hours are that offer free food with drink specials. However, don't overdo the drinks, only buy one or two of the drinks and socialize.

Work With Food

Work at a place that gives their employees free food such as pizza places.

Skip The 200 Channels

Don't get cable TV and that alone can save you as much as $50 a month. Buy a DVD player and wait for the cable channel shows to go hit the DVD Market.

Library

Borrow all your books from the Library and return them on time.

Health Insurance

Find out which pharmacies have the lowest cost for prescription medicines. I use Food 4 Less and the cost is reduced by over 50%

Park It

Unless it is more than a few miles to your destination, walk there and save your gas. If the weather outside isn't pleasant, take the bus.
