Frugal Christmas Gift Ideas For Senior Citizens

The holidays have officially arrived with the Bling Bling of Friday after Thanksgiving Christmas Shopping. That means that money that isn't for gifts and holidays will be carefully calculated. Or, for some, money is already on a carefully calculated ledger so a few extra dollars saved could be put towards an extra gift of bling.

Speaking from my own experience, some of my most appreciated gifts are those that I not only found useful, but that I would have had to purchase (or make) myself at some point. The two baskets below are not only frugal but can be as creative as you want it to be and personal.

In addition, I've read several articles about senior citizens stating that they appreciate the gifts of candy, dinners and trinkets, but in truth what they truly wish for is needed items that may not seem very gift like; such as everyday clothing, food baskets and cleaning items that are easy for them to use. Subtract and add items to fit the individual person.

All Natural / All Purpose Household Cleaner

Mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a decorative spray bottle (think crafty here) and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home.

  • 1 cup Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid castile soap
  • 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract.
  • Fill with cold water to the top of the container. If you use about 20 drops of essential oil you can delete the vinegar smell.

  • NOTE: Include a written note on the bottle that says "Always test on an hidden area first & never use vinegar on marble surfaces"

Vinegar is a great natural cleaning product as well as a disinfectant and deodorizer. It is safe to use on most surfaces and has the added bonus of being incredibly cheap. The vinegar smell disappears when it dries.

    All Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent

This makes a one gallon container and can also be used anywhere that the all purpose spray are used.

    • 1 cup of liquid Castile Soap
    • 1 /3 cup of Salt
    • 1 cup of baking soda
    • 1 cup of Vinegar
    • 40 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract.

To half a gallon of water, add the salt and baking soda which has been melted down over low heat and just enough water to help it dissolve. Add Castile soap and the vinegar.

Fill your gallon jug up the rest of the way, and then add Essential oils and Grapefruit extract.

    Laundry Room Fabric Softener

Use vinegar as a natural fabric softener by adding 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle in place of store bought fabric softener. Vinegar has the added benefit of breaking down laundry detergent more effectively. This can be especially helpful for people who have sensitive skin. Put in a decorative bottles labeled in large print letters stating it's use.
