New Flu Vaccination

Flu Mist is the product name of a cold-adapted, live-attenuated, trivalent influenza virus vaccine developed by Hunein "John" Maassab, Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Delivered as a nasal mist, Flu Mist offers an important new approach to help protect people from influenza.

A preliminary phase 3 study showed a statistically significant reduction (55%) in influenza illness caused by any influenza strain compared to the injectable influenza vaccine. Flu Mist is a frozen vaccine currently approved to prevent influenza in healthy children and adolescents, 5 to 17 years of age, and healthy adults, 18 to 49 years of age. The company is hoping to expand the approval for use in children as young as 1 as long as they do not have a history of wheezing or asthma.

The new refrigerated formulation of an inhalable flu vaccine won federal approval, its manufacturer. The new version of Flu Mist should allow for expanded use of the vaccine in places like schools, pharmacies and grocery stores, where the requirement that the original version of the vaccine be kept frozen presented difficulties. Some Flu Vaccinations info you should know

It seems like local pharmacies have flu vaccinations before a doctor's office will have them. Don't get angry at your doctor or the office staff. They do the best the can.

If the doctor's office forgets to call you to remind you to get your annual flu vaccination, call them and don't be angry, they have several other patients (possibly a couple hundred) that also want the vaccination. Put a reminder in your cell phone or computer calendar.

The media whips the population into a panic every year about a flu epidemic. It just creates a lot of unnecessary stress for everyone.
