Dress For Success - Help for those who cannot afford business clothing

This is Print View - Back to Normal View

We all know about thrift stores such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill -- a determined shopper can find quality articles buried in those racks.

But many people still have to decide between buying food and buying interview clothes in hopes of a better-paying job. Good jobs exist, but if you cannot afford to spend $100 or more on sharp business clothes, a major obstacle stands before you.

Fortunately, there are non-profit agencies that can help the underfunded get a position that requires business attire. One such agency is Dress For Success, whose aim is to provide business interview attire for women who cannot afford it on their own.

What is Dress For Success?

Dress For Success' Web site contains their mission statement:

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Clients are referred by various agencies after being assessed and verified that they are actively seeking work. Women who meet the criteria are outfitted in clothing appropriate to the role they are seeking. When they get the job, they are given three or four outfits to help them get through the first week or two.

In January 2008, the Greater Orlando Dress For Success chapter dressed its 300th client. Almost all of its clients have been single mothers -- that is 300 single mothers who are now successfully employed and contributing to central Florida's economy.

How can you make a difference?

Surveys and studies estimate that more than 50 pounds of used clothing are thrown away every day. Some say that approximately two quadrillion pounds of new and used clothing is thrown into landfills each year. 95 percent of used clothing is reusable, fixable and or recyclable. You can help by donating your men's or women's items to agencies that provide work outfits such as Dress For Success. Items in all sizes, and especially plus sizes, are needed. This includes:

  • Shirts
  • Pants
  • Shoes
  • Skirts
  • Dresses
  • Slacks
  • Socks

If you have worn it to work, it can benefit another working gal or guy.
