Doing The Things That Support Your Vision

Prioritize what needs to be done now and what can wait a little longer. Everyone has numerous 'To Do' items on they're list, and there is never enough time, energy or possibly resources to do them all. Items will be left undone or pushed towards the end and no matter how hard you try, a mountain of To Do items will begin to haunt you. Prioritizing is a way to solve that frustrating problem.

Make sure to recognize the goals that are genuinely important to the success of the vision. You do not want to spend an excessive amount of time on work that appears productive but only keeps you occupied. The important or high priority, tasks are the tasks that help us achieve our long-term goals or can have other meaningful and significant long-term consequences.

One technique that many people use is the A - D method.

You can mark each of your tasks with "A", "B", "C" or "D", depending on its importance.

"A" means that the tasks must be completed as soon as possible that day. A's are usually the last minute changes and problems that occurred without warning and can have a long term effect to the goal and vision.

"B" means that the To Do item is important and must be worked on after you are finished with the "A" tasks.

"C" tasks are scheduled projects, appoints, meetings and on track developments. C's are the stepping stones to completing a short term goal.

"D" tasks are the when you have time tasks. These are the items that can be delegated.

When you set priorities in a To Do List, ask yourself if any of your tasks can be eliminated or delegated. Delegation is an important part of supporting the vision. As the old saying goes, you can not do it all yourself. Along the way, you will occasionally need help and staying stubborn will only defeat the vision.

Anther key components of putting first things first is learning to say "No."

In the beginning, it can seem awkward and unpopular with others. Start learning to say no by identifying past moments where we could have and should have said no. Almost everyone can relate to past decisions where we should have said so but didn't. Others feel guilty if they would say no and they shouldn't. Unfortunately, a lot of people will seek out the "yesers" because they know they will not say no. If you're a yeser, a simple and direct "No, I can't help you with that today," is the best solution.

The "I can't help you with that today," is a gradual move towards understanding when you can and when you can not offer your assistance. Remember that you have your own A - D To Do List and other people's projects may often fall into the D category. Within the same thought bottle, remember that you will eventually need assistance on one of your projects, so don't alienate potential future assistance.

If you have time, than say yes and offer assistance. However, if you do not have time or you are working on an A item, recognize that you are not able to help.
