Biomedical Engineers
Average Annual Salary: Approximately $65,000

In a nutshell: Biomedical engineers conduct research and design new machines to help prevent, diagnose, treat, and repair damages caused by disease or injury.

Biomedical engineers use engineering principles to design and develop medical instruments and devices such as artificial kidneys and pacemakers.

  • Knowledge of how to build machines, buildings, and other things. Also includes knowledge of how to use computers, machines, and tools to do more work more usefully.
  • Knowledge of making and using plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Knowledge of designing, using, and repairing machines and tools. Most areas of math and science including overall mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.
  • Knowledge of injuries, illnesses, and defects. Also includes the knowledge of setting up a plan for treatment.


  • Design equipment and technology to meet user needs.
  • Imagine how something will look if it is moved around or its parts are rearranged.
  • Recognize the nature of a problem and use reasoning to come up with a number of creative and effective solutions.
  • Develop a vision of how a system should work.
  • Make sense of information that seems without meaning or organization.
  • Analyze needs and requirements when designing products.
  • Choose a mathematical method or formula to solve problems.
  • Quickly and accurately compare letters, numbers, objects, pictures, or patterns.
  • Recognize important pieces of information, put them in order or combine them, and draw conclusions.
  • Determine the tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Express ideas clearly when speaking or writing so others understand the information.
  • Use scientific methods to solve problems.
